First of all, I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs Liang for their money and efforts, taking the lead in leading the entire team, circle of friends and other merchants to actively subscribe to the platform, fund-raising preparation activities, fund-raising auction items, etc. certainly. The 2005 vintage in Matakana was generally dry, albeit a little windy during flowering and fruit set, which produced well-spaced, evenly distributed grape bunches. The temperature remained moderate through the season, from 20 to 25 degrees C, and the nights were cool.There was a touch of rain from an ex-cyclone in late January, but thankfully this was not a major issue for the fruit.
In November 2012, a private dinner was held to commemorate the visit of HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall to New Zealand at the exclusive Otahuna Lodge in Canterbury, the dinner was the final function attended by the royal couple and
included other dignitaries and heads of state including the New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key. They were to return to the UK the same evening via Northern Australia and Asia.
At the dinner, The Duchess of Cornwall requested a bottle of Pomerol, a red wine from the Bordeaux region of France. The main grape variety used in Pomerol is Merlot, which is traditionally blended with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Otahuna Lodge was unable to provide a Pomerol for the Duchess, they did have several Merlot Cabernet Franc blends from Hawkes Bay, including a number of wines with some age.
The Royal Family’s personal butler visited Otahuna’s cellar to assess the wines that would be considered closest in style to a Pomerol, after careful deliberation, they chose a bottle of the 2007 Matakana Estate Hawkes Bay Merlot Cabernet Franc. This was the first vintage
